RT @ApogeeCampaigns: Rick Perry Personally Connects with Texans Using Social Media http://post.ly/10WKyRachel Farris Apogee Campaigns (@ApogeeCampaigns) posted a nice piece on Governor Perry's use of social media to reach out to voters. However, I think when discussing best practices from a business perspective, it's worth mentioning Governor Perry's other side: the side that blocks progressives. Mike Chapman (@MikeChapman) works for Apogee Campaigns.
-
@MikeChapman @apogeecampaigns How do you feel about public officials (@GovernorPerry) "blocking" people who disagree with him (like me)?
-
@MeanRachel @mikechapman He told me today in an interview he likes that about Twitter, that he has the option to block for bad language, etcRachel Farris Statesman tech journalist Omar Gallaga (@omarg), who is working on a piece on the use of social media in the Governor's race, happened to have interviewed Perry that very day.
-
@omarg @mikechapman I've never cursed at him, and really don't curse at all on Twitter. Interesting because he blocks LOTS of progressives.Rachel Farris Okay, so I might curse every once in a while on Twitter. But does that warrant blocking me?
-
@omarg @mikechapman there's actually a Twitter list someone started of Texas progressives he blocks, I think @kathtx has it.Rachel Farris The list, created by Katherine Haenschen (@kathtx), can be found here:
http://twitter.com/KathTX/blocked-by-governorperry
It includes several progressives, Democratic party employees and the President of the University Democrats. -
@omarg @MeanRachel @mikechapman Not about politicians, but I want to block some tweets so I won't see it.I don't care if they see mineRachel Farris Jennie Chen (@MisoHungry), a social media professional who operates several successful Twitter accounts, jumped in on the debate.
-
@MisoHungry @omarg @mikechapman difference is, Jennie, you're not a public official who claims to protect constitution and free speech.
-
@MisoHungry @omarg @mikechapman and you're not the Gov of TX who's supposed to be listening to more than just the "convenient" citizens.
-
@MeanRachel @misohungry @mikechapman This gets into an interesting area about whether public officials should be required to follow back all
-
@MeanRachel I find that weird. That's really weird that anything public is blocked.
-
@omarg follow back is one thing. Block is, to me, a more personal way of saying "I specifically don't want to hear from you."
-
@MeanRachel @misohungry Not necessarily. I sometimes block for other reasons including not wanting someone to see my Tweets easily.
-
@omarg @misohungry again, you're not elected by the people to serve as Governor of the state of Texas. (not that you couldn't be!)
-
@MeanRachel @misohungry @mikechapman Is that Twitter account considered property of the state/taxpayers or is it his personal account?
-
@omarg Guess it depends on who pays for @GovernorPerry's cell phone & whether he's tweeting from govt. computers.
-
@MeanRachel Not sure on that. I know he Tweets primarily from his BlackBerry and that his campaign staff all use their own devices.
-
@omarg it's basically an online act of taking a letter I might have written him & immediately putting it in the paper shredder.
-
@MeanRachel If I tweet from my Statesman computer, that doesn't make my Twitter acct. Property of the Statesman, but I take your point.
-
@MeanRachel Hmm... Doesn't that just make it hard for you to find his tweets? Can't he still read yours easily? Does he still see the @?
-
@omarg Does blocking someone also prevent their tweets to you or their RTs from showing up in your stream?
-
@MisoHungry he would not see the @. I can see when people RT him (reporters usually).
-
@MeanRachel I'm not making a case for him/her/anyone else, I'm just wondering why/how of it.It does seem odd that someone public would block
-
@omarg only @governorperry blocks me which, as we know, is his own personal account.
-
@MisoHungry Yes. You're no longer following them and won't see their @replies. Of course a Tweetdeck search/column is an easy way around.
-
@MeanRachel @omarg staffers vet letters & phone calls. If Perry manages own Twitter acct, blocking subs for traditional layers.Rachel Farris Clay Spinuzzi (@spinuzzi) is a professor of rhetoric at the University of Texas.
-
@MeanRachel I don't have my notes in front of me but I'll take a look tomorrow and see what else he said on that. Very interesting topic.
-
@spinuzzi @omarg @misohungry interesting indeed. Thanks for engaging in the convo with me, which is more than I can say for our Gov.
-
@MeanRachel I just know that I would never block you. :)
-
@MikeChapman good answer. ;) I just think that it's worth addressing when talking about Perry's SM outreach.Rachel Farris What do you think? Is it appropriate for a public official to block those of differing opinions on his or her social media sites?
